For 2018 the "Lowest Priced National DIY Retailer of Kitchens" accolade has been awarded to B&Q for consistently having the most lowest priced kitchens when compared to Homebase and Wickes. Every day during 2018 we monitored and logged the prices of comparable kitchens sold by the UK’s National DIY Retailers Wickes, Homebase and B&Q. We did this using a typical 8-unit kitchen model layout and a breakdown of the Kitchen Compare 8-unit Galley model components can be seen at the link below.

Comparable Ranges

Of the range of kitchen styles sold across the three retailers, eighteen were considered to be directly comparable because they were sold by at least two of them. These styles were White Gloss, White Handleless, Cream Gloss, Cream Handleless, Light Grey Gloss, Light Grey Handleless, Dark Grey Gloss, Dark Grey Handleless, Matt Finish, Cream Shaker, Light Grey Shaker, Ivory Shaker, Dark Grey Shaker, Green Shaker, Tongue & Groove, Light Wood Shaker, Solid Oak Shaker and Light Wood Style.

The links below show the comparable ranges and provide a full download of the recorded price data from 2018 for the kitchens that form the basis of this comparison.

Process and Methodology

The following process was used to determine if the kitchens are comparable:

1. The Kitchens are matched visually in terms of their colour and appearance, based on the following priority order: Colour/Style (eg. White Gloss); Product (eg. Base Unit); Dimensions (eg. 1,000mm) and Purpose (eg. Drawer).

2. If the product specifications are comparable in all material respects as set out at above and sold by at least two of the three retailers, they are verified as meeting the same need or being intended for the same purpose and are considered comparable. This approach allows the comparison to take account of both value and premium kitchens as sold by the retailers so far as they are considered comparable.

3. Any secondary differences in features and/or specification outside of the criteria set out at i above (eg. cabinet thickness) are identified and documented. These differences are set out in the table provided at the link below.

4. The price of each component used to make up the typical 8-unit kitchen is monitored and recorded daily throughout 2018.

5. At the end of 2018 the price data was analysed to establish which retailer’s price was the lowest across the 18 comparable styles.
